When we want to take a bus ride to Uyuni, we hear the town is blocked because of a dispute about the new bus terminal… But there lie the famous salt plains from Bolivia, the biggest in the world, which we really want to visit. Instead we travel to Tupiza, another option for that trip.
In Tupiza we book a 4-day ride along the highlights of South Bolivia. Because of the blockade a lot of the jeeps in town are struck in Uyuni, so departure is insecure until the last minute. Finally we receive the news that we can start next day around 9 o’clock! Jippie…

Next day we’re ready at 9, but all is postponed till 11… Trouble with fuel and organisation… And finally we’re off at 12 o’clock. This is what we call ‘Bolivian time’.
But once we’re off, the route becomes more scenic with every mile we enter in the mountains. Beautiful valleys, amazing roads and great views accompany us all day long. Only the back seats in the jeep are not so comfortable. That evening we drive till late, before we arrive in the ice-cold, but comfortable hostel. Dinner is poor, but we have a good sleep.

On our second day the scenery changes completely… We’ve entered a flat region, where the stunning white and green lake steal the show! The ‘Desert of Dali’ with numerous colours and stones along the road, gives us different breath-taking views. The freezing wind is our ally all day long. It’s hard to spend a long time outside the car.
In the evening we arrive at the ‘laguna colorado’, where flamingo’s stay in the freezing wind. Unbelievable!

Staking in Uyuni! De toegangswegen vanuit Potosi en Oruro zijn versperd!
We denken dat het geen verstandige oplossing is om toch door de versperring te willen geraken. We beslissen dus wijselijk om rond te rijden naar Tupiza en van daaruit een trip te regelen naar de zoutvlakte. De weg van Potosi naar Tupiza is adembenemend.

Opmerking:
Ondertussen zitten we bijna aan de Argentijnse grens! Een familie wou ooit Peru bezoeken… maar we dreven wat af…

We vertrekken op familietrip door het Zuiden van Bolivia. We hebben een jeep voor ons viertjes! We betaalden wel iets meer maar hopen zo meer comfort en bewegingsruimte te hebben. De eerste kilometers tussen de prachtige rotsformaties rond Tupiza laten ons al woordeloos. Dat belooft!

De dag van de meren. We krijgen lagunes te zien van diverse kleuren afhankelijk van de mineralen en het zonlicht. De prachtige flamingo’s maken het plaatje compleet!
