The area around San Agustin is well known for the many historic sites around. They go back as early as 2000 BC, making them one of the oldest sites here in South America. The current theory states it are ancient burial sites, but no bones were ever found in the area.
According to me these spots were religious centres, were sacred initiations were performed.

The first day we visit a couple of the spots on horseback. The Magdalene River basin that surrounds us, gives it all a really beautiful scenery. Two mountain ranges, divided by the river, fed by numerous waterfalls…
Another group of monuments we explore with a jeep tour, guiding us along the sugar cane fields. We stop at one of these ‘panela’ factories, where we see how the sweet blocks are fabricated. Above that some beautiful waterfalls and a spectacular narrowing of the Magdalene river complete the trip.
When we visit the main exploration site, we’ve already seen lots of statues, but the hilltop view stays mesmerising. That day we hope for a good evening party, with Colombia winning the world cup match, but it turns out to become a funeral road…

Our trip around San Agustin finishes with a great raft trip along a stretch of the Magdalene river, before we take a long bus trip to Bogota.
In Bogota we spend the day visiting the colonial centre, including Botero and Gold Museums, before we catch our evening flight to Lima. In Peru we will meet my father and his girlfriend, to accompany us a couple of weeks in the South Peru area.

Op een paard naar de archeologisch sites in de omgeving van San Agustin. Ontspannend en bovendien veel leuker dan wandelen, want we passeren heel wat modder.

Amai…wat een intense dag! We gingen naar een aantal archeologische plaatsen rond San Agustin en twee watervallen. Eentje ervan is de 2de hoogste van Zuid-Amerika, na Salto de los Angeles in Venezuela.
We gingen op stap met 7 Colombianen uit Bogota. Het was een supertoffe bende en we leerden veel bij over het land. Ze hebben hier heel wat lekkers in de omgeving: rietsuikerdrank, lulo, sinaasappelen, limoenen, tamales…allemaal vers. We proefden alles. Bij iedere hap voel je de vitamienen binnenstromen! Gisteren probeerden we ook “vino de la caña”. Een gefermenteerde versie van de rietsuikerdrank. En inderdaad…je voelt goed de alcohol.

…een memorabele dag voor de Colombianen! Voetbalmatch Colombia-Brasil of is het Brasil-Colombia???
Al vroeg in de morgen hoor je muziek en zie je overal gele en rode t-shirts in het straatbeeld. De spanning is overal te voelen. We gaan het archeologisch park bezoeken en zorgen dat we rond 15u terug in het centrum zijn. Bij de 7de minuut hoor je “Goaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal…”. Ai ai, 1-0 voor de Brazilianen. Het dorp houdt zijn adem in… De spanning is te snijden. Bij het 2de doelpunt van Brazilië krijg ik de tranen in de ogen. Vooruit Colombia…niet opgeven! Je ziet de mensen supporteren voor hun vaderland tot de laatste minuut. Maar niets mag baten. Je ziet de mensen in de straten naar huis terugkeren…net een rouwstoet. Maar toch blijven ze fier op hun land, want overal gaat de muziek aan en ze rijden trots met de Colombiaanse vlag door de straten. Ze gaan er sowieso eentje op drinken. En wij ook…
