When our boat from Santarem arrives in Manaus, Ilse gets off board to search for the connection to Tabatinga, on the border with Colombia, while I guard our luggage.
It seems that within 10′ a boat leaves. So we can manage to get just in time at board for a direct connection… Spoken from a fast service.
In Macapa, actually Santana, we hear that there is only a boat on monday, at 6pm… This gives us nearly two days in Macapa. We use the time to have some good dinners, otherwise you’re not in Brasil. I think that eating little here is a national sin.
The rest of the time we spent in our hotel room, surfing and preparing a couple of things. We also buy some locks and a spare hard drive for the long trip upstream. When we buy the boat tickets, we make the mistake to buy them in an agency instead of immediately on the boat, but we thought that it is a direct connection from Santana to Manaus…
We vertrekken naar Saül, in het hart van de jungle in een klein vliegtuigje…12 personen. We vergeten wel even dat we terug in Frankrijk zijn en dat de controles op het vliegveld terug wat strenger zijn. Ze nemen zelfs onze spaghettibokaal af! Dat is wat anders dan in Guyana waar je met wapens door de controle geraakt…want die zijn er niet. In Marapasoula stapt bijna iedereen af en wij vliegen veder met nog 3 andere passagiers: de bekende dief van Saül (Cora had hem herkend aan de luchthaven), een verweerde hippie en een slapende vrouw. Waar gaan we naar toe???
La Guyane est un département d’outre-mer. Het is als het ware een provincie die werd afgescheurd van Frankrijk en werd verplaatst overzee, in Zuid-Amerika. Hier gelden dezelfde wetten als in Frankrijk. Het is gewoon een stukje Europa in Zuid-Amerika. En wij als Europeanen hoeven zelfs geen stempel in ons paspoort aan de grens.
De mensen hebben hier zeker geen slecht leven. Ze verdienen 40% meer dan in “la métropole” (waarmee ze Frankrijk bedoelen) om dezelfde levensstandaard als in Frankrijk aan te kunnen houden. Bovendien telt 1,5 jaar dienst in Guyane als 1 werkjaar in Frankrijk. De mensen kunnen dus vroeger op pensioen!
Kourou stays an important name in Guyane, France and Europe, since the European launching path for their space shuttles is located here…
The space port supports three types of rockets to be launched from this location, the Ariane 5, the Vega and the Soyuz launchers.
