Dare to be you
The Aboriginal people knew about the beauty of the island, when they named it K’Gari, what means paradise. Fraser Island is the biggest sand island in the world, 120 km long and 15 km wide. It is a huge mass of sand, with an entire rainforest on it. Part of the beauty of this patch of land is formed by the numerous freshwater lakes. These are formed by the rain, falling on an impenetrable soil layer, formed by the remnants of leaves and other organic materials.
Upon arrival in the National Park at noon, we head to the information bay to find out about all the options in this Gorge. Quite tired of driving another 800 km in two days, we decide to go for the three day hike, to discover the entire area. This time we need to pick our tent and sleeping bags with us for the two nights inside the gorge camp ground. We start the trip with rain jackets and waterproof flybags on our backpacks, because of the heavy rainfall in the beginning. The fall stops after some fifteen minutes, when we see the sun again.
We’re now travelling some time in Australia and I want to rethink our first question… Van or 4WD?
After this period, both of us are really glad we drive a 4WD. It opens many more gates and proves to be real fun! Agreed, we plan our trip along the car, with more challenging and daring roads. We take frequently dirt roads or 4WD tracks, but this rough country asks for a suitable car.
After some wonderful days at sea it is once again time to go on and drive. But we start our day with walking along the Esplanade in Cairns once again, where we spot some waterbirds we’ve not seen yet. Our list of typical Australian wildlife starts to grow steadily!

Vandaag zijn we vroeg uit de veren….5u. Om 6u20 worden we verwacht aan de duikshop. Daar gaan we voor een 3-daagse duiktrip op het wereldberoemde Great Barriere Reef! Spannend!
