Since the rain made all the dirt roads uncrossable, we’re struck in the towns surrounding the Outback. Menindee is just a small village, not really nice to spend some days so we head immediately to Broken Hill…
Mungo National Park covers most of an ancient dry lake bed on the plains of south western NSW. During the ice ages, Lake Mungo was a chain of freshwater lakes strung along Willandra Creek. These dry lakes preserve one of the longest continual records of Aboriginal life in Australia, dating from around 50 000 years ago through to the present day. Dating of ancient burials shows that these are the oldest known fully modern humans outside of Africa.
Sedert ik terug in het land ben, geniet ik van het samen kamperen. We worden echte deskundigen in het bivakeren. Bart gebruikt zijn ingenieursinzicht voor het bouwen van waslijnen en het opspannen van tentzeilen. Ik heb me ondertussen omgetoverd in een keukenprinses gespecialiseerd in gezonde voeding in de bush.

After that park, we leave the coastal area and head to the Snowy Mountains… The next days we’ll drive through these Australian Alps on our way to Lake Mungo NP.
From Queanbeyan we take the scenic drive through these mountain lands, camping along in the NP. The nights are extremely cold over there, so we are glad to have our sleeping bags and a fire pit on the grounds. The wood fire warms us up during dinner before we climb in our tents.
