Crazy Georgetown

In Georgetown we drove straight to Peter’s house, our fall-out base for the next period in Guyana. When we entered his house, he directly introduced us in the city and feeling of Guyana in general. He explained the mining industry, the electricity trouble, the climate of illegality and the places to be.
Guyana runs runs entirely on fuel generators, making energy extremely expensive throughout the country. That makes also that there is no industry in the country, except for the mining… Gold, silver, diamond, bauxite, …
After that we went for a brief introduction in the town. A real Caribbean mix of people greeted us, ranging from black to white with every thinkable taint of brown in between. Most buildings are made of wood, but after one hour we’ve seen all the important buildings in town already.

Iwokrama Jungle Lodge

When we crossed the border from Bonfim (Brasil) to Lethem (Guyana), we booked a 14 hour bus trip through the jungle to Iwokrama Jungle Lodges…
The lodge itself is considered one of the highlights of Guyana, but according to us the colonial style management and high prices for everything make it a not so interesting spot. The lodge is located at some 1 km from the main road Lethem – Georgetown, so easily accessible by public transport, but too close to civilisation to feel and experience the many different jungle animals.

Manaus… in the middle of the Amazon

She covers half of the South-American continent, the Amazon river, her side rivers and the huge rainforest around it. Here live more animal species per square meter than anywhere else on the world… Except maybe in the huge metropolitan areas. The difference is that the first one are mostly different species, while the others are more or less the same.
Here we are… Manaus… Somewhere halfway the river, and another World Cup City.

Rio de Janeiro…

The carnival is world famous, exotic samba dancers a dream, the Christ well known, Copacabana legendary and its crime rate notorious, but on a long trip through South-America Rio is a really have to be there… It is also one of the guest cities for the World Cup Soccer this year… we know that, with all the traffic jams and road works! We’ll only have a 2-day brief tasting, but that’s enough.
In comparison with Sao Paulo’s 20 million, the 6 million of Rio are peanuts… Nonetheless the vibe is unmistakable.
