The Mighty Inca

After 33 hours bus, we arrive finally in the City of the Inca, Cusco. The entire town is built on the remnants of am old Inca town, but today it feels more like a big touristic attraction.
For me it is the entrance way to the famous Inca Citadel, Machu Picchu… But we’re quite late, so the question is: ‘will I get there, without any preparation?’. Next morning I walk around half of Cusco to find an entrance ticket, but it is with the help of Ilse that I finally manage to get hold of a train ticket to the citadel.

The Salt Plains of Uyuni, Bolivia

From that spot we have a long drive to the salt flat… We cross a sandstorm, pass along some flamingo lakes and see the landscape changing in the white salt region. That evening we sleep in one of the salt hotels along the real flat.
Early morning we leave to experience sunrise on the flat. The polygonal shape of the flat looks miraculous and when we continue to the cactus island, we can enjoy some funny shapes. The swinging grannies, a bunny, a meerkat, … After that we keep driving along the flat to Uyuni, which is open only for one hour.

Freezing at the Altiplano, Bolivia

When we want to take a bus ride to Uyuni, we hear the town is blocked because of a dispute about the new bus terminal… But there lie the famous salt plains from Bolivia, the biggest in the world, which we really want to visit. Instead we travel to Tupiza, another option for that trip.
In Tupiza we book a 4-day ride along the highlights of South Bolivia. Because of the blockade a lot of the jeeps in town are struck in Uyuni, so departure is insecure until the last minute. Finally we receive the news that we can start next day around 9 o’clock! Jippie…

Mining Town vs Colonial Town

In samenspraak geven we de reis een andere wending. We willen allemaal samen de hoogvlakte, de altplano, van Bolivia verkennen.
We vertrekken om 6u30 op goed geluk naar het busstation. En we hebben geluk. Om precies 7u zitten we op de bus naar Oruro. Tegen de middag zijn we daar al en om 12u30 hebben we een verbinding naar Potosi. De tijdsgap geeft ons de gelegenheid om een vers frutsapje te drinken en een stuk kip met frieten in een plastiek zakje mee te graaien. De fles cola erbij maakt van ons 4 fastfoodjunkies. Maar we maken voornemens voor een vegetarisch avondmaal…
We doorkruisen prachtige landschappen en zien de eerste stukjes zoutvlaktes. Ook onze neus en ogen raken steeds droger bij het doorkruisen van de dorre omgeving.

Welkom in de hoogste miljoenenstad ter wereld!
Vandaag staat een bezoek aan de archeologische site “Tiwanaku” op het programma. Het verlaten van de hoofdstad is geen sinecure. Een verkeer van je welste waar iedereen probeert vooruit te komen. Gevolg: opstopping. En bovendien is er vandaag nog feest (onafhankelijkheid van La Paz) wat ons zeker niet vooruit helpt!
