The Endless Rivers of Guyana

Today we leave for the greatest trip in the country. Visiting the egg laying turtles at Shell Beach, at the far west corner of the country, near the Venezuela border.

The trip starts similar to the first one, we take a bus to Parika, where we take this time the boat to cross the 30 km wide Essequibo delta to Supenaam, before a taxi brings us to Charity. In Charity we eat at a local fast food restaurant… Impressive there in the middle of nowhere.

Crazy Georgetown

In Georgetown we drove straight to Peter’s house, our fall-out base for the next period in Guyana. When we entered his house, he directly introduced us in the city and feeling of Guyana in general. He explained the mining industry, the electricity trouble, the climate of illegality and the places to be.
Guyana runs runs entirely on fuel generators, making energy extremely expensive throughout the country. That makes also that there is no industry in the country, except for the mining… Gold, silver, diamond, bauxite, …
After that we went for a brief introduction in the town. A real Caribbean mix of people greeted us, ranging from black to white with every thinkable taint of brown in between. Most buildings are made of wood, but after one hour we’ve seen all the important buildings in town already.

Iwokrama Jungle Lodge

When we crossed the border from Bonfim (Brasil) to Lethem (Guyana), we booked a 14 hour bus trip through the jungle to Iwokrama Jungle Lodges…
The lodge itself is considered one of the highlights of Guyana, but according to us the colonial style management and high prices for everything make it a not so interesting spot. The lodge is located at some 1 km from the main road Lethem – Georgetown, so easily accessible by public transport, but too close to civilisation to feel and experience the many different jungle animals.
