We arrive a round 2 am in hūhéhàotè (呼和浩特), which means the Blue City
in Mongolian. A reference to the blue sky arching over the grasslands
of old.
We head directly to our hotel for another couple of hours sleep…
Nonetheless on our sleeper train we could sleep some 31 hours.

Our first job in the morning is applying for a visum for Mongolia. So
we jump in a taxi and drive straight to the Mongolian Embassy. There
everybody has to wait outside, after they ask the soldiers for an
entrance number.
After some two hours waiting in the cold outside, someone appears and
tells us that the consulate closes down today, since they have no
working internet connection. So everyone has to leave… Ilse explains
to someone we really need to apply, since we only have three days left
in the country. A moment later, the gates miraculously open and some
people – including us – are allowed to enter. So we fill in the papers
and apply for a speed procedure. Maybe this afternoon (if the internet
works) and otherwise tomorrow.

So that afternoon we spend in town for a couple of necessities…
Printing and posting a number of pictures we promised people around
the country, buying Ilse a new bra, having a haircut (and a good
one!), trying a delicious hotpot and just strolling a while in town.
Otherwise we also enjoy our spacious hotel room…

The next morning we sleep a long while, enjoying the perfect mattress.
Afterwards we head to the consulate, where our visum awaits us.
Afterwards we go to the train station and book us a train ticket to
the border.
Thereafter we stroll a couple of hours in this friendly (and quiet
town)… Nonetheless there live here some 820000 persons, the town
feels quiet, relaxed and has numerous beautiful and modern shopping
malls, restaurants and shops. We like the vibe of that city.

The trip from Hohhot to Erlian is a train trip from some 8 hours…
We’ll spend our last day in China there, before we enter Mongolia the
next morning.
A new adventure, new people and lots of new experiences.

Na 3 dagen treinen en 4000 km verder, komen we aan in Hohhot.
Om 3u ‘s morgens checken we in in een 3*-hotel en genieten van het
dubbel bed en de schone lakens.
Na de visumaanvraag voor Mongolië gaan we ondergoed kopen! Na meer dan
een jaartje is de elasticiteit uit mijn BH’s verdwenen met alle
gevolgen van dien. Shoppen in China is ook iets speciaals. Vanaf het
moment dat je een voet in de winkel zet, word je geëscorteerd door een
winkelbediende. Gelukkig kan ik hier het ondergoed passen. Hier hebben
alle BH’s sponsjes in de cups als “opvulling”, letterlijk en
figuurlijk. Uiteindelijk vind ik toch een “bustenhouder” die de nodige
stevigheid en soepelheid combineert. De volgende dag vind ik zelfs het
merk “Triumph” wat me tevreden stelt voor een 2de investering.
We laten ons ook even verwennen in de kapperszaak. Tot nu toe hadden
we er weinig vertrouwen in, maar deze designzaak leek het risico
waard. En inderdaad…knippen kunnen ze! Ze nemen alle tijd en elk
haartje wordt afgemeten!
We eindigen de dag in een hotpot-restaurant. Dit was al een tijdje
onze droom maar tot nu toe hadden we nog geen geschikte lokatie
gevonden. Even uitleggen: In de eettafel zitten metalen kommen waarin
een soep komt die aan de kook wordt gehouden. Je bestelt groenten,
vlees, vis en sausjes naar eigen wens en kookt ze in de bouillon. Het
lijkt wat op fondue maar dan veel gezonder. HEERLIJK!!!
We kunnen geen betere maaltijd bedenken om ons hoofdstuk in China af te sluiten.
